The Otto Hopfenmueller Library is dedicated to the memory of Fr. Otto Hopfenmueller, the leader and superior of the first group of Salvatorians who came to Northeast India in 1890. At present, it houses over 1,30,000 volumes dealing mostly with Scripture, Theology, Spirituality, Church History, Missiology, World Religions, Ethics (with special emphasis on Christian Moral Theology), History, Literature, Indian Cultures (with particular emphasis on Northeast India). It has over 13,600 bound volumes of journals/reviews and magazines. The current subscription for journals and magazines is 101. The library also houses some rare books (in Latin) of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the first printed Khasi Dictionary, facsimile copies of the Guttenberg Bible, Codex Vaticanus, etc.
The library welcomes gifts of books, which will be duly acknowledged. And donations over 800 books will be acknowledged by giving all these books together a specific place within the library, with the name of the donor clearly mentioned.
Importantly, the Documentation Centre of the library gathers and preserves historical documents of significance. It focuses mainly on mission history in India in general and in Northeast India in particular. It has in its collection 470 volumes of The Statesman of Calcutta (1933-1966) and 300 volumes of The Times of London (1940-1975).
The Otto Hopfenmueller Digital Library supplements printed books and journals. It was begun in 2013 and continues to grow on a daily basis. It is a simple LAN-based digital database of books, articles, book reviews, etc. This institutional repository (accessible only from within the library) has over 1,00,000 digital books and over 1,00,000 digital articles, besides a few theses, book reviews, magazines, etc. Books and articles can be accessed and read on the computers provided in the library and students have the possibility of having a few pages printed out if necessary. The library is in a particular way at the service of the Church and the people of Northeast India. It aims at promoting interdisciplinarity or crossdisciplinarity in studies. It is ultimately at the service of Truth.
