Sacred Heart Shrine, Mawlai, Shillong
On Sunday, 8 June 2025, the Sacred Heart Shrine at Mawlai was graced by the presence of close to 10,000 faithful who gathered for the Annual Pilgrimage in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a deeply cherished spiritual event hosted by Sacred Heart Theological College, Mawlai. The solemn Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Most Rev. Bernard Laloo, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Shillong, who encouraged the pilgrims to remain rooted in the love of Christ and to live as credible witnesses of hope and mercy in today’s world.
The pilgrimage brought together people not only from the Archdiocese of Shillong but also from neighbouring dioceses such as Nongstoin and Jowai, truly making it a regional celebration of faith and devotion. The shrine grounds were vibrant with prayer, song, and silent adoration as pilgrims from all walks of life came to renew their commitment to the Sacred Heart of Jesus — the source of divine grace and consolation.
A special moment of the day was the Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction Service held in the afternoon, led by the animation group United for Christ. Pilgrims listened attentively to a thought-provoking talk on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope” delivered by Rev. Fr. Varickasseril Jose, SDB, who invited the assembly to find strength in Christ’s Sacred Heart amidst the uncertainties of life. The rite of Benediction, given by Bishop Bernard Laloo, concluded the sacred time with solemnity and grace.
Various religious houses and institutions actively participated in the adoration, each taking their time to animate the hour with hymns, reflections, and moments of silent prayer. Their participation added richness and diversity to the devotion, reflecting the unity of the Church in prayer.
The liturgy was beautifully accompanied by the Choral Evangelists, whose harmonious voices and spiritually uplifting music added depth to the celebration and helped the faithful enter into the mystery of the Sacred Heart with joy and reverence.
The Fathers and Brothers of Sacred Heart Theological College, Mawlai, poured their heart and soul into the meticulous preparation and organisation of the event, ensuring that every detail — from the liturgy to logistics — was arranged with care and devotion. Their dedicated service was visible in the smooth flow of the programme and the deeply prayerful atmosphere that pervaded the entire day.
This year’s pilgrimage was not just a religious observance but a powerful testimony of the living faith of the people. It rekindled in many hearts the fire of love for Christ and the call to walk as hopeful disciples in a world in need of healing and peace.
